Clinical Outcome and Influencing Factors of a New Short-term Quadruple Therapy for Helicobacter pylori Eradication. A Randomized Controlled Trial (MACLOR Study) Gerhard Treiber, MD; Joachim Wittig, MD; Susanne Ammon, MD; Siegfried Walker, MD; Leen-Jan van Doorn, PhD; Ulrich Klotz, PhD

 Summary

            A new short-term (5 day) Quadruple therapy regimen to eradicate H. pylori is presented:

Amoxicillin 1gm bid, Clarithromycin 250mg bid, Metronidazole 400 mg bid plus either

lansoprazole 30 bid or ranitidine 300 bid for 5 days.  

Approximately 80 patients per group

              - Eradication rates (intention to treat analysis): Lanzoprazole group 89%, ranitidine group 88%.

              - Therapy for only 3 days decreased efficacy.  

Patients most likely to respond were: Older than age 50, no history of peptic ulcer disease, non-smoker and CAG (+) strains.
